Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is reported to be “conscious and communicating” after suffering a concerning head injury during Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool.

The incident occurred in the 7th minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when Bentancur stooped to head a corner and collapsed to the ground unchallenged. Medical personnel attended to the 27-year-old on the pitch for nine minutes, during which he received oxygen, before being substituted by Brennan Johnson.

A tense silence fell over the stadium as teammates and fans anxiously observed the situation.

In a statement shared at halftime, Tottenham reassured supporters: “Rodrigo is conscious, speaking, and has been taken to hospital for further evaluation.”

The injury comes shortly after Bentancur returned to the squad, following a suspension for a controversial incident involving teammate Son Heung-min.

The match continued as planned, but concern for Bentancur overshadowed the evening’s events. Further updates on his condition are expected from the club following hospital tests.
